Laretta arrived in Atlanta by nightfall, finding the house in immaculate condition and splendidly decorated, thanks to Marilee, who had supervised the workers while she was gone.

Just two more weeks! And LaRetha would be here with the family and friends that loved her. Hopefully she would stay until after New Year’s Day, for the annual celebration banquet.

Lounging in a favorite gown, she looked through a pile of mail, neatly stacked on her bedroom desk. Checking her Caller I.D. and seeing no names that required an immediate response, she called LaRetha. She got her voice mail.

Maybe she’s out with Douglas, she figured. Good for her.

“I’m home, safe and sound. Talk with you later. Love you. Bye.”

The girl knew how she hated talking to people first thing in the morning or after a long trip.

Her visit had been longer than she’d planned, but she had enjoyed the much needed rest. She did work too hard, but what else was there? She would go into the office in the morning and see what was pending. Considering her competent group of agents, everything would undoubtedly be in order.

My poor little girl, she thought. LaRetha was having more than her share of difficulties, right now. But in spite of that, she looked fantastic! Far more vibrant and much happier than on her last visit there. And it probably had more to do with that fine attorney Douglas Davis than Kellen, as LaRetha would have her to believe.

That Kellen was a real charmer; tall and handsome, with smooth ebony skin and rippling muscles that were tight and just right. And with an overt sensuality that she would have run from, were he pursuing her. She’d had her fill of ‘ladies men’.

But even she had to admit that there was something special going on between those two. He seemed to have come into her daughter’s life at just the right time. And they had just clicked, somehow. So, despite her own misgivings, she had decidedly backed off, watching quietly from a distance. It did make for a better relationship with LaRetha.

When Kellen called to tell her that he wanted to surprise LaRetha with a visit, she had told him about the shooting. Now she wished she hadn’t. But at the time, she’d hoped he might talk some sense into her, thinking that if anyone could do it, he could. How wrong she was!

And now, she was nearing the point of desperation to find someone who could get through to the girl. Then it occurred to her that this was a job for someone equally as headstrong and persuasive her daughter. And that would only be Germaine.

She hadn’t wanted to hurt LaRetha’s feelings by telling her, but her grandson had called two days before Thanksgiving; just before his mother’s tragic incident with the intruder. He just wanted to say he was okay, he’d said. Everything was going well with him. But she could tell that he missed his mother.

“Call her! She’s worried to death about you.”

“I will. Soon.”

“Why wait? What could possibly be more important?”

“She just doesn’t understand me, that’s all.
